Swimming Dominates On Opening Night

TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitman College swimming teams dove into the season in style with a pair of dominant men's and women's victories over Pacific Lutheran on Friday night. The women's team won 126-78 and the men's squad topped the Lutes 122-76.

"Obviously we are pleased with the overall team outcome, but I am so proud of the competitiveness of our team today," said coach Jenn Blomme. "They fought hard no matter what was on the line - case in point was the end of the 1000, when Jay Boivin and Andrew Tate had a battle for the last 75 yards of the event, even though it was an uncontested event. If we can have that kind heart right now when we are just getting started, I'm very excited for what's to come."

The meet opened with a victory by the Blues in the men's 400 medley relay. The team of Brodie Salzbrener, Kyle Milburn, Keenan Riggs-Turpin and Keenan Tiddle took top honors with a race time of 3:42.06.

Riggs-Turpin, Tiddle, Slazbrener and Milburn all also added individual victories in the meet. Riggs-Turpin won the 200 fly (2:02.66), Tiddle took top honors in the 100 freestyle (49.25) and Salzbrener and Milburn placed first in the 200 free (1:51.65) and 200 IM (2:09.32), respectively. John Leeds also won a pair of events, finishing first in both the 50 free (22.64) and 500 free (5:05.53).

Jay Boivin won the aforementioned 1000 free (10:59.09) which was made up of three Whitman competitors.

Frances Lenz and Josephine Piel led the way in the women's side of the meet, both with two individual victories and a first-place finish in the 400 free relay to close the evening. Lenz won the 1000 free (11:48.64) and 200 back (2:19.19), and Piel took top honors in the 200 free (2:03.33) and 200 breaststroke (2:33.56).

Avery Riley and Anneliese Hanson also each won individual events before teaming up with Lenz and Piel to win the 400 free relay. Riley took top honors in the 200 fly (2:21.74) and Hanson did the same in the 500 free (5:51.12).
