Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls To CMS at UCSC Invite

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Ali Efe Isik posted a team-high 18 points, Alex Pape added 10 more but it came in defeat as the Whitman College men's basketball team fell 68-50 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the team's opener of the UC Santa Cruz Classic on Saturday night at the Kaiser Permanente Arena.

The Blues (2-2) struggled from the floor and especially the three point line, shooting 33% and 15% (3-20) respectively. Grant Hunt added five points, four rebounds and three steals.

AJ Rohosy scored a game-high 20 points for the Spartans (3-2) who were just a few votes off a preseason top 25 ranking. Neil Owens added 15 points on 5-10 shooting from three while also corralling a game-high seven rebounds.

CMS controlled the game early and built a double digit lead as the first half neared its midpoint. Hunt's early three pointer was followed by a 9-0 CMS run that put them up 15-5 with 11:39 to play. Will Householter nailed a three pointer to highlight the early spurt.

Djordje Lazarevic halted the run with a three pointer then Efe Isik scored at the hoop, but CMS continued to hold a near-double digit lead. It was then the Blues turn to unleash their own run, doing so with a 13-2 jaunt that tied the score at 24-24 with 2:37 to play. Owens recaptured the momentum for the Spartans, hitting a three pointer to help his team take a four-point lead into the break.

CMS set the tone for the rest of the game early in the second half. Caelan Jones and Owens hit back-to-back three pointers early to push the lead back up to double digits. The lead went as high as 15 points before consecutive Pape layups cut the Whitman deficit to seven points with 11:29 remaining, but the Spartans reestablished themselves and pushed the lead back to double digits for the remainder of the game.

Whitman plays its final game of the tournament on Sunday against host UC Santa Cruz. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
