Men's Soccer Takes Down Puget Sound In NWC Action

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Jacob Burrill scored twice and assisted on another to highlight an impressive 3-1 victory by the Whitman College men's soccer team over the University of Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action on Saturday at James Hayner Field.

The Blues (11-6-2, 8-5-2 NWC) struck first with the game not even five minutes old. Oliver Dickson gained possession on the left flank and served a perfect ball to Jacob Burrill in the penalty area. Burrill one-timed the pass into the side netting to put his team up.

The Blues had several more scoring opportunities right after the goal but the Loggers (6-5-7, 5-3-7 NWC) found the equalizer not even 10 minutes later. UPS earned a corner kick taken by Pema Globus. His kick found the wide open head of Liam Elliot who finished past Lucas Haigh in net for the Blues.

Burrill then scored his second to regain the lead for Whitman with just inside of 10 minutes to play in the half. After quality possession in the attacking half, Lucas McAllister lofted a short ball into the penalty box which Burrill collected and finished past an onrushing Ryan Saunders.

Whitman kept up the pressure early in the second half. Takahiro Hikida was a menace on the left flank, reaching the bi-line on multiple occasions but unable to facilitate a finish. Midway through the second half, Whitman had its best opportunity that didn't find the back of the net as Sawyer Valero found McAllister at the top of the penalty box, but his shot missed the crossbar by a whisker.

The volume of possession by the Blues made any scoring chances by the Loggers few and far between. Whitman put the game away inside of one minute to play in unusual fashion. The Blues earned a free kick about 40 yards out and caught UPS napping with a quick restart. Burrill played in Oliver Dickson who scored an empty netter to seal the win.

The Blues take the field one time this season when they host Pacific Lutheran on Sunday for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 11:00 p.m.
