Men's Basketball Falls To Hardin-Simmons

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team had hoped to start December on a winning note, but instead struggled from the floor in a 76-58 loss to Hardin-Simmons on Thursday night at the Sherwood Center.

Alex Pape and Ali Efe Isik led the Blues (2-4) with 12 and 11 points, respectively, with Isik adding six rebounds. Whitman put up one of its poorer shooting nights of the season, shooting 34% from the floor and 29% in three pointers. Isaiah Amato added nine points and grabbed four rebounds, and Grant posted a game-high five steals.

Chris Bryant led four players in double figure scoring for the Cowboys (4-3), posting a game-high 17 points on 7-11 shooting. Austin Brewer added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Silas Livingston chipped in 11 points and handed out a game-high nine assists.

The Blues never led in the game but played to a very competitive first half. After falling behind early, Efe Isik and Amato both nailed three pointers to knot the score at 10-10 with 15:40 remaining. Livingston halted the run with a three pointer, but Aidan von Buchwaldt's three pointer brought the Blues to within one with just over 12 minutes to play.

Though they never pulled away, the Cowboys began to expand on their slim lead as the game approached halftime. The Blues went nearly seven minutes without hitting a field goal while HSU built a 30-21 lead with 4:40 to play and closed the half up seven points.

Isaac Fotu opened the second with a three pointer on Whitman's first possession, but HSU countered with a 13-0 run to take control of the game up 15 points. The Blues again struggled to hit from the floor and didn't score their second basket until Pape got his three ball to go with 13:50 to play.

The Blues showed signs of life midway through the second half. Down 11, Milos Sarenac scored in the paint and Grant Hunt capitalized off a Fotu steal and drilled a three pointer to cut the lead to six points with 8:40 remaining. Will Bartoszek had the answer for HSU, hitting three pointers on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead back up to double digits.

Whitman is next in action on Friday, Dec. 13 hosting the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
