Men's Soccer Tops Evergreen State In Season Opener

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Jacob Burrill scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the Whitman College men's soccer team to a 4-2 season opening win over The Evergreen State College on Saturday night at Hayner Field.

Riki Kobayashi also scored and assisted on one of Burrill's goals as the Blues (1-0) had to hold off the pesky Geoducks who twice cut the deficit to one goal.

Burrill got the party started early with a pair of goals in the first half, the first a great finish to the far post. Oliver Dickson one-timed a lofted pass from Sawyer Valero back across the goal which Burrill slotted low past Evergreen keeper Brendan Gribek. The second came in the 30th minute when Burrill was the recipient of Kobayashi's service to put the Blues up 2-0.

Sage Scheurell scored only seconds later for Evergreen as the Blues carried a one-goal lead into halftime. The scoreline stood until the 77th minute when Burrill received a through ball into the box and one timed it across the goal mouth to Kobayashi who slotted it home for the 3-1 lead.

Evergreen State scored to cut into the lead moments later but Burrill wasted no time in his response, completing his hat trick with a goal in the 82nd minute to put the game to bed. 

Next up for the Blues is an exhibition match at Columbia Basin College on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 5:00 p.m.
