Men's Soccer Tops Chapman, Closes Trip With Back-to-back Wins

ORANGE, Calif. - Fernando Lopez-Vega scored in the first half then assisted on the game winner to lift the Whitman College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Chapman at Wilson Field on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams had ample scoring chances but it were the Blues (3-1) who capitalized on one more. The Blues struck first as Sawyer Valero found Lopez-Vega who scored in the 33rd minute past Panther keeper Patrick Bulubenchi.

Chapman leveled the score just after halftime as Jonah Friang scored past Niclas Isensee who had spelled Lucas Haigh at halftime for the Blues.

The game winner came midway through the second half when a combination play between Lopez-Vega and Lucas McAllister allowed Kevin Serrano's shot to beat Bulubenchi.

Haigh and Isensee combined for three saves and Bulubenchi posted four in his full 90 minutes of action.

After a successful 2-1 road trip, Whitman now returns home and will open Northwest Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Pacific. Kickoff at Hayner Field is set for 12:00 p.m.
