Men's Basketball Too Much For Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ali Efe Isik scored a game-high 21 points, Bernard Dzesi chipped in a season-high 12 rebounds and the Whitman College men's basketball team remained undefeated in Northwest Conference play with a dominant 75-56 win over Willamette on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.

Jacob Fotu added in a season-high 15 points off the bench for the Blues (6-7, 4-0 NWC) whose swarming defense turned 24 Willamette turnovers into 29 points.

D'Ante Dean led Willamette with a team-high 14 points.

The Blues were solid from the floor early on leading to a 19-9 lead by the midpoint of the first half. Dzesi and Efe Isik scored on their team's first two possessions, then later Grant Hunt hit a three pointer to put Whitman up 10 points.

The Bearcats didn't let the game get away from them however. Four Willamette players scored in a 9-0 run. Kai Brown capped the run with a three pointer that whittled the lead to 19-18 with 8:57 to play. Whitman quickly responded and, after an Isaiah Amato three ball, the lead had jolted back up to double digits. Dzesi's layup extended the advantage to 11 points as the Blues took a 35-27 lead into the break.

If there was any chance of Willamette closing the gap to start the second half, the Blues squashed it early and blew the doors wide open. A pair of Efe Isik layups highlighted an 8-0 run to start the half, then Hunt drilled a three pointer and Whitman led 46-30 with 16:31 to play.

In the back half of the second half, Aidan von Buchwaldt nailed a three pointer to push the lead north of 20 points and the rout was on.

Whitman hits the road next weekend when they visit Pacific University and George Fox.
