Swimming Teams Square Off Against Hawai'i

1/12/2025 12:10:00 AM

HONOLULU - The Whitman College swimming teams continued their Hawaii training trip with a dual match against Division I University of Hawai'i, falling to the Rainbow Warriors in both the men's and women's competitions on Saturday evening at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The men's team fell to the 'Bows 155-64 and the women's team fell 161-59.

"Tonight's meet against Hawai'i was a real treat," said coach Jenn Blomme. "It was the senior meet for UH, and there were some nice celebrations to honor their seniors. We are in the middle of our heaviest phase of training of the entire year, so expectations in terms of speed were admittedly pretty low. And happily in many cases exceeded.  But we haven't raced in over a month, so it was great to sharpen up the details and have some really great competitors to chase."

Added Blomme of the meet which was held outdoors, "the announcer shared with the crowd that rain is traditionally considered a blessing in Hawai'i and after a hot start to the meet and the last 25 of the men's final relay, the sky opened up to a short but lovely rain shower. What a way for their (UH) seniors to finish up their last home meet."

Though UH handily won both competitions, John Leeds placed fourth in the 200 free (1:44.75), nearly three seconds faster than Hawai'i's Makena Ginoza.

The Blues return to Northwest Conference play next weekend hosting Pacific and George Fox.
