Men's Basketball Blows Past George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - Grant Hunt led all scorers with a season-high 22 points to guide the Whitman College men's basketball team to a resounding 95-75 win at George Fox in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.

The win equaled the largest margin of victory of the season and largest point total, and kept the Blues (8-7, 6-0 NWC) undefeated in conference play and atop the league standings. This now sets up an early season showdown between Whitman and Whitworth in this season's first edition of the Battle of the Whits to take place on Tuesday in Spokane.

Isaiah Amato contributed 17 points on 8-14 shooting and also grabbed eight rebounds. Milos Sarenac nearly chipped in a double double off the bench with nine points and a season-high 10 boards.

As a team, Whitman shot a scorching 55% from the floor and 45% in three pointers.

Aiden Price led the Bruins with 15 points off the bench, and Cory Schramm corralled a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Blues jumped on the Bruins early and never looked back. Hunt nailed a pair of triples and added another bucket as Whitman scored 12 unanswered points to open the game. Chris Nickelberry finally got the Bruins on the board just before the first media timeout, but that did nothing to stop Whitman's momentum, who opened up a 20-3 lead with 13:38 to play until halftime.

Sarenac then got in on the action midway through the half. After hitting a pair of free throws, he nailed a three pointer then scored at the hoop as the Blues opened up a 24-point lead with 9:40 to play. The lead swelled to as many as 28 points before Hunt nailed a three pointer late in the half to put the Blues up 51-28 heading into the break.

George Fox was unable to cut the lead to any fewer than 15 points in the second half as Whitman cruised to the win.

The Battle of the Whits gets underway this Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 6:00 p.m.
