Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Upended By Linfield

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Isaiah Amato scored a team-high 15 points and Milos Sarenac put up eight points and grabbed nine rebounds, but a late Wildcat surge did the Blues in as the Whitman College men's basketball team dropped its second straight with a 63-61 loss to Linfield in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.

The Blues (8-9, 6-2 NWC) overall shot it well but shot just 14% (3-21) in three pointers and 28% from the floor in the second half. Whitman still had an excellent chance to pull off the win after holding a four-point lead with 3:35 to play, but back-to-back Linfield three pointers reversed the tide.

Cade Collins and Garrett Callsen shared game-high honors with 17 points and Collins added five boards and four assists.

Both teams played to a competitive first half that saw the Blues take a 35-30 lead into the locker room. Grant Hunt hit a three pointer on the first possession of the second half to help the Blues open up an eight-point lead, but they would not put another point on the board for nearly eight minutes. Meanwhile, Linfield ran off 18 unanswered points to go up 48-38 with 12:12 to play.

The Blues answered with a run of their own. After Ali Efe Isik's bucket ended the WIldcat run, Amato hit back-to-back shots to cap a 10-0 Whitman burst to tie the game with 6:27 remaining. Whitman later held a four-point lead but key three pointers from Collins and Max Juhala put Linfield up 57-53 with 1:41 to play.

Jacob Fotu hit a late three pointer to keep the game close, but the Blues were never able to regain the lead. Alex Pape's buzzer beater from the corner hit off the front rim as Linfield walked away with the win.

Whitman will spend the next two weekends on the road, first at Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Jan. 31. Tip time is set for 6:00 p.m.
