Women's Basketball Cruises Past UPS In NWC Opener

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Carly Martin scored a game-high 18 points, Korin Baker nearly posted a double double with 17 points and nine rebounds and the No. 12 Whitman College women's basketball team opened Northwest Conference play with a convincing 75-48 win over the University of Puget Sound on Friday night at the Sherwood Center.

Four starters posted double figures in scoring for the Blues (9-1, 1-0 NWC) who shot an impressive 44% from beyond the arc. Christiane Carlisle and Natalie Lundberg carried the load on that front hitting seven three pointers between them.

Autumn Hill led the Loggers with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Mele Sake added nine points and also pulled down seven boards.

The opening quarter saw a tight contest as neither team led by more than a pair. Whitman trailed by a point before Martin sank a three pointer with 5:02 to play. UPS later led by a point, but Whitman closed with back-to-back buckets from Holly Morgan and Carlisle.

Whitman kicked it into high gear in the second quarter and outscored the Loggers by 11. Carlisle nailed a three pointer to open the period but UPS managed to pull even at 17-17 with 5:49 remaining. Whitman then unleashed a haymaker on the Loggers and scored 17 unanswered points to set the tone for the remainder of the game. Lundberg hit two three pointers and Carlisle added another as the Blues cruised into halftime with a 35-22 lead.

Whitman outscored the Loggers in the third and fourth quarters and coasted to the win.

Whitman will look to sweep the weekend when they take on Pacific Lutheran on Saturday. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
