Women's Soccer Comes Up Short To Puget Sound

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team suffered a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to the University of Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action on a day marked by rain, wind, and cold conditions on Sunday afternoon at James Hayner Field.

"Another very close game," said head coach Michelle Voiland. "The players gave everything they had and I am very proud of the energy and effort today. These women are incredibly dedicated and care so very much about each other and the program. I am sorry for the group that we could not get points. We will regroup and get ready for the second round of the conference play."

Whitman and Puget Sound braved difficult weather for a defensive battle that remained tight from start to finish. The match's only goal came in the 31st minute, when Puget Sound's Kate Short scored, assisted by Zoe Witter, giving the Loggers all they needed.

Whitman pressed for an equalizer but could not break through the visitors' defense or slippery conditions.

The Blues managed four shots, with two on target, while Puget Sound registered 11 shots and seven on goal, underscoring the tense defensive struggle.

Eleanor Johnson had a strong first half in goal for the Blues with three saves but conceded the game's lone goal before Seanee Still took over after halftime and tallied three more saves.

The Blues' next opportunity to rebound arrives next weekend with NWC matches at Pacific and Willamette.
