Swimming Breezes Past Pioneers On Halloween Night

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Whitman College swimming teams put together an impressive season-opening performance, both dominating Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference action on Halloween night.

Whitman College swimmers put together a dominant day in the pool, touching first in nearly every event on the docket.

The meet opened with an emphatic victory in the men's 400 medley relay, as the team of Finn Stukerjurgen, Kyle Milburn, Ian McClelland, and Brodie Salzbrener cruised to a winning time of 3:44.35. Stukerjurgen set the tone with a smooth backstroke leg before Milburn and McClelland extended the lead, and Salzbrener powered through the freestyle anchor to seal the win.

Individual efforts carried the same momentum. Calvin Tappert sprinted to victory in the 100 freestyle at 10:30.14, while Salzbrener followed with a composed win in the 200 freestyle, clocking 1:48.23. 

Stukerjurgen continued his standout day with a strong 2:04.99 performance in the 200 individual medley, showcasing his all-around skill. Ethan Templeton-Palmer added another top finish for Whitman with a 2:26.73 swim in the 200 breaststroke. In the 200 backstroke, Stukerjurgen earned his third event win of the day with a sharp 2:01.90.

The women's side was equally assertive. Natalie Fearn opened with a win in the 100 freestyle at 12:01.18, and Avery Riley set the pace in the 200 freestyle, finishing first in 2:02.70. Riley later doubled up with a commanding victory in the 200 butterfly at 2:18.35. Teague Monahan earned the sprint crown with a 26.15 in the 50 freestyle and circled back for another win in the 100 freestyle, stopping the clock at 56 seconds flat.

Elly Rectenwald dominated the 200 IM with a 2:24.22 finish, while Siena Hayes posted a controlled 2:40.28 win in the 200 breaststroke. In the distance events, Anneliese Hanson claimed the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 5:52.15 after a steady, even-paced effort.

Whitman capped the meet with the women's 400 freestyle relay team of Monahan, Ella Tyroler, Cassidy Monroe, and Riley, who powered to an impressive 3:51.59 finish to seal another first-place result for the Blues.

The Blues close out the weekend on Saturday, Nov. 1 at George Fox. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
