Blues Close NW Collegiate Invite

BOISE, Idaho - The Whitman College swimming teams closed out the fall portion of its schedule with a strong showing at the NW Collegiate Invitational, capping the weekend with standout performances and a flurry of personal bests at the Idaho Central Aquatic Center. The Blues, both men and women, delivered depth and determination across the final day, highlighted by a top-five finish from first-year Finn Stukerjurgen in the men's 200 backstroke.

Stukerjurgen led the charge for Whitman, advancing to the A final of the men's 200 backstroke and finishing fifth overall in a time of 1:57.28. His splits of 27.44, 56.60, and 1:26.35 through the first 150 yards showcased his consistency and speed, placing him among the top backstrokers over the weekend. Stukerjurgen's performance was the highest individual finish for Whitman on the men's side.

Whitman's depth was on display in both individual and relay events. In the men's 200 backstroke, Calvin Tappert won the B final and finished ninth overall in 1:59.86, while Collen Lokan placed 10th in 2:07.66. The men's 400 free relay, featuring Elliot Yung, Brodie Salzbrener, Tappert, and Ian McClelland, placed seventh in 3:13.82. The B squad, with Kyle Milburn, Tyson Scott, Stukerjurgen, and Flynn Davis-Lawrence, finished ninth in 3:21.64. The 800 free relay also scored, with McClelland, Adrian Dulong, Tappert, and Yung finishing sixth in 7:16.51.

Tappert continued his strong weekend with a fourth-place finish in the 1650 freestyle, clocking 17:17.32. Jay Boivin followed in sixth (17:29.03), and Owen Hughes placed seventh (21:53.79), demonstrating Whitman's depth in the longer events. 

On the women's side, Avery Riley led the team with a 10th-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:10.72), winning the B final. Siena Hayes and Elly Rectenwald both scored in the 200 breaststroke, with Hayes also finishing 23rd in the mile at 19:04.10.

Whitman's women's 400 free relay, featuring Rectenwald, Riley, Teague Monahan, and Anneliese Hanson, placed 10th in 3:38.35. The B relay, with Cassidy Monroe, Jordan Lloyd, Ella Tyroler, and Hayes, finished 17th in 3:55.98, giving the Blues two scoring quartets in the final event of the meet. The women's 800 free relay, with Avery Riley, Siena Hayes, Teague Monahan, and Anneliese Hanson, placed 12th in 8:11.44, while the B squad of Cassidy Monroe, Ella Tyroler, Molly Fitzgibbon, and Jordan Lloyd finished 13th in 8:57.00.

The NW Collegiate Invitational marked the end of the fall portion of Whitman's schedule, with the team heading into the winter break on a high note. The Blues return to action on Friday, Jan. 16 at Willamette. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
