Agnew Wins 50 Free, 400 Medley Relay At NWC Championship

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The first full day of the Northwest Conference Swimming Championship came to a close on Friday evening which saw the Whitman College men's and women's swimming teams sitting at fourth and second, respectively. The four-day event is taking place at the King County Aquatics Center.

Shaye Agnew paced the women's squad whose hold on second is a strong one. Agnew delivered two top finishes, first in the 50 free (23.93) then in the 400 medley relay (3:55.01) to close the session. She swam the winning relay with teammates Frances Lenz, Josephine Piel and Avery Riley.

Riley and Piel had solid outings also in the 500 free and 200 IM, respectively. Riley set a new school record when she placed second with a race time of 5:07.49 and Piel swam her 200 IM in 2:09.87.

The men's side saw John Leeds put up a solid showing in a pair of events. He placed fourth in the 500 free (4:42.16) then joined teammates Brodie Salzbrener, Ian McClelland and Keenan Tiddle for a silver finish in the 400 medley relay (3:36.91) to close the evening.

The Blues are back tomorrow for Day 3 of the Championships. Prelims begin at 9:30 a.m.
