Men's Basketball Triumphs In Battle of the Whits

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In front of a raucous Sherwood Center crowd, the Whitman College men's basketball team delivered a crucial victory, taking down Whitworth 79-63 in the Battle of the Whits on Tuesday night.

Grant Hunt scored a team-high 16 points for the Blues (11-13, 9-6 NWC) whose win tonight went a long way toward securing a spot in Northwest Conference with one game to play. As the lone game on the conference docket, the win lifted Whitman into third in the standings.

It was a total team effort from the Blues who appear back on track with back-to-back wins. Grant Hunt led five players in double figures with 16 points including 4-8 in three pointers. Ali Efe Isik scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds, and Alex Pape chipped in seven points, three steals and six assists.

Jake Holtz led all scorers with 19 points for the Bucs (21-3, 12-3 NWC) who entered the game with the league's best record and will host the NWC Tournament in two weeks time.

The Blues led early but the Pirates, not unexpectedly, rallied to take the lead midway through the first half. Both teams shot it well in the opening 20 minutes as Whitman shot 54% from the field and Whitworth 45%. The game entered the break with the Blues up 43-36.

The second half saw the Blues continue to shoot well, but also lock in defensively and force Whitworth into only 27 points on 25% shooting. Whitman doubled up the Pirates in bench scoring led by 11 and 10 points, respectively, from Djordje Lazarevic and Jacob Fotu.

Whitman will look to lock down a spot in the tournament when it closes the regular season next Saturday at Linfield. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
