Women's Soccer Too Much For Evergreen State In Season Opener

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Bailey Bell netted three goals for the Whitman College women's soccer team to highlight an impressive 5-0 season-opening win over The Evergreen State College on a hot Saturday afternoon at James Hayner Field.

"What a great way to start the 2025 season," said head coach Michelle Voiland. "I was very happy to see the team set the tone for the game immediately. It was a fun and fast attack today and the finishes were excellent. Nice to see a hat trick from Bailey (Bell) as well as goals from Ellie (Cortes-Cruz) and EJ and a number of players feeding the assists. Such an amazing team effort. The players have worked extremely hard this preseason so it was fun to see that hard work shine out on the field today." 

The win was the fourth straight in a season opener for the Blues and fifth without a loss. Whitman made little doubt of the result, scoring twice in the first 15 minutes on goals from Ella Johnson and Bell's first of her hat trick.

Geoduck keeper Anna Varela kept a clean for the rest of the half where she posted six saves before Katie Gresham came on and played the entire second half. Gresham was immediately put to the test as Ellie Cortes-Muniz scored her team's third goal under a minute into the half and gave the Blues a three-goal lead.

Seanee Still and Eleanor Johnson split time in net for the Blues and watched their team pepper the Geoduck goal to the tune of 22 shots.

Kareena Mathew assisted on two of Bell's goals, her second coming on Bell's final goal just under four minutes after Cortes-Muniz found the back of the net.

The Blues will look to make it back-to-back wins on opening weekend when they host the College of Idaho on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
