Men's Basketball Falls In Rematch of NWC Tournament Final

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Whitman College men's basketball team saw Lewis & Clark College pull away in the second half for a 78-61 loss to the River Otters on Friday night at Pamplin Sports Center in a rematch of last year's Northwest Conference Tournament final.

Ali Efe Isik poured in a game-high 24 points but did not get enough help beyond Marcel Elicagaray's 12 points, all coming from beyond the arc. Milos Sarenac corralled a game-high 13 rebounds.

Whitman (6-8, 1-4 NWC) came out trading blows early, knocking down seven first-half threes and leading by as many as four before Lewis & Clark closed the period on a mini-run to take a 36-33 edge into halftime. The Blues briefly grabbed the lead out of the break, but the River Otters answered with multiple scoring bursts, outscoring Whitman 42-28 over the final 20 minutes to take control.

Efe Isik attacked the paint and got to the line for his impressive total while adding six rebounds and three assists. Sarenac gave Whitman a major lift on the glass to go with six points, helping the Blues to a 45–26 advantage on the boards.

Whitman shot 39.3 percent from the field and 30.4 percent from three, while Lewis & Clark hit 48.4 percent overall and 47.1 percent from deep to create separation. Turnovers and transition proved costly, as the Blues were outscored 23-4 in points off turnovers and 10-3 in fast-break points despite winning points in the paint 32-38 and second-chance points 9-2.

The Blues close out the weekend on Saturday at George Fox. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
