Blues Drop A Pair of Dual Meets At Whitworth To Close Regular Season

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Whitman College swimming teams closed out their regular season Saturday afternoon, dropping a dual meet to Whitworth University at the Whitworth Aquatic Center. The Blues men fell 198-64, while the women came up short 179-78 in a session that featured several strong individual performances despite the team scores.

"I'm really proud of how our team performed today," said head coach Jenn Blomme, "We knew Whitworth had the upper hand so we really weren't focused on the team scores at all. Rather today was about one last chance to try an alternate race strategy, perfect small details like turns, and practice going all in against tough competition. In essence it's all preparation for the conference championships in two weeks. I was really encouraged by how the team raced and pushed each other to stay motivated during a long meet."

In the opening men's 200 medley relay, the Whitman squad of Calvin Tappert, Elliot Yung, Ian McClelland and Brodie Salzbrener placed third overall in 1:40.10, while the the women's 200 medley relay saw Whitman's team of Siena Hayes, Elly Rectenwald, Cassidy Monroe and Anneliese Hanson take second in 1:58.54.

Individually on the men's side, Jay Boivin led the way in the mile with a third-place 17:13.36, backed by Ian Friedrich in fifth and Owen Hughes in sixth. Boivin's mile performance stood as one of the best in his career. Salzbrener headlined the mid-distance crew with a runner-up 1:47.52 in the 200 free, followed by teammates Adrian Dulong in third and McClelland in fourth. Tyson Scott earned third in the 100 back at 56.38, with Stukerjurgen and Tappert rounding out the scoring in fifth and sixth, and Yung added third in the 100 breast at 1:04.11 with Templeton‑Palmer and Milburn close behind.

Riggs Turpin grabbed second in the 200 fly in 1:58.14 and later added fifth in the 100 fly, with Boivin also scoring in that event. Scott sprinted to fourth in the 50 free in 23.03, with Davis‑Lawrence fifth, then Yung, Salzbrener and McClelland stacked a 3‑4‑5 finish in the 100 free.

Despite the loss on the women's side, Avery Riley delivered a standout showing by taking gold in the three events. She topped the field 100 free, 200 fly and 100 fly.

Hayes paced the distance group with third in the 1650 and later added third in the 200 back. In the 200 free, Teague Monahan placed fourth and Jordan Lloyd fifth, and Monahan later delivered a strong double with second in the 100 fly and fourth in the 100 free. Rectenwald picked up third in both the 100 breast and 200 IM, with Satasha Egenes and Monroe also scoring in the breaststroke and distance events.

Whitman's relays closed the day on the podium as well. The men's 200 free relay of Yung, Davis‑Lawrence, Dulong and Scott took third in 1:30.38, with the B relay of Tappert, Friedrich, Boivin and Milburn in fifth. On the women's side, Monroe, Hanson, Monahan and Riley combined for third in the 200 free relay at 1:46.34, and the quartet of Darrah Lerch, Lloyd, Tyroler and Fitzgibbon added a fifth-place finish.
