Men's Basketball Falls To Whitworth

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitman College men's basketball team dropped an 87-57 decision to Whitworth University in Northwest Conference action Tuesday night at the Sherwood Center. Mehmet Benner led the Blues with a career-high 14 points, while the Pirates' Stephen Behil posted game highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds.

Whitman battled early but trailed 39–25 at halftime as Whitworth used efficient shooting and a strong interior presence to build a double-digit advantage. The Blues were limited to 29.0 percent shooting from the field and 23.3 percent from beyond the arc for the game.

Benner provided a spark off the bench, finishing 5-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-7 from three-point range in 17 minutes of action. Bernard Dzesi added seven points and five rebounds, with additional scoring support from Milos Sarenac, Ali Efe Isik, Julian Witt, and Luke Johnson as the Whitman bench totaled 33 points.

Behil's double-double paced a Whitworth attack that shot 47.8 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three (10-for-24), while also owning a 36-20 edge in points in the paint. The Pirates held a 43-35 advantage on the glass and converted 16 fast-break points to just two for the Blues.

With the result, Whitman moves to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in Northwest Conference play, while Whitworth improves to 9-3 and 3-0 in the league.

The Blues return to action on Friday, Jan. 9 at Linfield. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m.
