Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Serrano, Alvarado score twice as Blues rally past Puget Sound, 4-3

TACOMA, Wash. — Kevin Serrano and Nathan Alvarado each scored twice as the Whitman College men's soccer team rallied from a second-half deficit to defeat the University of Puget Sound 4-3 in a high-scoring Northwest Conference matchup Sunday at Baker Stadium.

With Pacific Lutheran losing to Whitworth on Sunday, the victory pulled the Blues back even with PLU atop the Northwest Conference standings after handing the Loggers their first league defeat.

Serrano pulled the Blues even in the 78th minute, and Alvarado delivered the game-winner less than six minutes later, helping Whitman improve to 8-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play. Puget Sound fell to 5-1-4 overall and 4-1-3 in the NWC.

Whitman twice took the lead in the first half but entered halftime tied 2-2 before Jackson Smith's second goal of the afternoon put the Loggers ahead in the 52nd minute. The Blues answered with two goals in the final 13 minutes to secure the road victory.

Serrano opened the scoring at the 6:40 mark, finishing off an assist from Luis Mendez Caballero. Smith answered for Puget Sound in the 18th minute on a goal assisted by Sebastian Telles, but Whitman needed just three minutes to regain the lead. Alvarado scored at 20:03, with Spencer Lovell and Mendez Caballero credited with assists.

The Loggers drew even again in the 33rd minute when a ball glanced off a Whitman defender's head and under the crossbar for an own goal. The teams remained tied through the end of the first half.

Puget Sound took its first lead shortly after the break. Jarren Merced assisted Smith at 51:13, putting the Loggers ahead 3-2. Whitman responded with a flurry of chances, including two shots on target by Henry Pierce that Puget Sound goalkeeper Mason Allison saved in the 52nd and 56th minutes.

The breakthrough came at 77:16 when Serrano scored his second goal of the match off an assist from Ellett Clum-Stockton. Alvarado then completed the comeback at 83:02, converting an assist from Riki Kobayashi to give the Blues a 4-3 advantage with just under seven minutes remaining.

Whitman held Puget Sound without another shot on target after Smith's second goal. The Loggers' final attempt came in the 86th minute, when Rhys Foote sent a shot high.
The Blues finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on target. Mendez Caballero recorded two assists, while Lovell, Clum-Stockton and Kobayashi added one apiece.

Niclas Isensee played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save for Whitman. Allison finished with two saves for Puget Sound, which held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Now back with a share atop the league table, the Blues look to continue that momentum into next weekend's matches at Linfield and Lewis & Clark.
