Women's Soccer Falls At UPS, 3-1

TACOMA, Wash. — Avery Cohen converted a penalty kick early in the second half, but the Whitman College women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the University of Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action Sunday at Baker Stadium.

The Blues moved to 7-3-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play, while the unbeaten Loggers improved to 11-0-1 and 8-0 in the NWC. Whitman goalkeeper Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky finished with nine saves, including seven in the second half.

Puget Sound took the lead in the 22nd minute when Kate Short scored her seventh goal of the season off an assist from Sofia Evans. Kaitlyn Osada added an unassisted goal just over six minutes later, giving the Loggers a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Whitman cut the deficit to one in the 50th minute. Following a Puget Sound foul, Cohen converted from the penalty spot at the 49:20 mark for her fifth goal of the season, making it 2-1.

Pasena-Littlesky kept the Blues within striking distance with a series of second-half stops. She denied Anya Dubois in the 52nd minute and made two saves against Zoe Witter over the next four minutes. Later, she turned away attempts by Evans, Megan Ulrich and Dubois to preserve the one-goal margin. 

Puget Sound restored its two-goal lead in the 82nd minute when Ellie Rutkin converted a penalty kick following a Whitman foul. The Blues did not record another shot after Cohen's goal.

The Loggers finished with a 24-1 advantage in shots, including a 12-1 edge in shots on goal, and earned all seven of the match's corner kicks. Cohen's penalty accounted for Whitman's lone shot.

Whitman will look to get back into the conference race when they visit Linfield and Lewis & Clark next weekend.
