Men's Basketball Falls At Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. – The Whitman College men's basketball team could not slow a hot-shooting University of Puget Sound squad on Friday night, falling 84-59 in Northwest Conference action at Memorial Fieldhouse.

Marcel Elicagaray turned in a strong offensive outing for the Blues, leading all scorers with 19 points while adding six rebounds and three steals. Ken Higgins joined him in double figures with 14 points, and Jacob Fotu chipped in eight points and four rebounds.

Whitman trailed 36-27 at the half after hanging within single digits for much of the opening period, answering several early Logger runs with timely drives from Elicagaray and finishes at the rim by Higgins and Fotu. Puget Sound, however, began to take control after the break, using a 9-0 surge early in the second half to stretch the margin and never looking back.

The Loggers shot 50 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three, turning 20 made field goals in the paint into a decisive interior advantage. Whitman, which finished at 32.8 percent from the floor and 4-of-27 from beyond the arc, found its best offense attacking the basket, scoring 30 points inside and 14 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds.

Puget Sound placed four players in double figures, led by 16 points and six rebounds from Hugo Rutherfurd and 11 points from Ian Cook. The Loggers' bench also supplied a major boost, outscoring Whitman's reserves 38-9.

With the result, Whitman moves to 9-15 overall and 4-11 in Northwest Conference play, while Puget Sound improves to 16-8 and 11-4 in the league.

The Blues close the regular season on Saturday against Pacific Lutheran. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
