Women's Basketball Takes Down Whitworth In Low-Scoring Affair

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitman College women's basketball team clamped down defensively and leaned on a big night from Morgan Montgomery to grind out a 47–37 Northwest Conference road win over Whitworth on Tuesday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Montgomery poured in a game-high 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, while adding six rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes. Emma Lena Baker was a force in the paint and on the glass, finishing with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds to come up just shy of a double-double. She also chipped in three assists, three steals and two blocks in 30 minutes.

The Blues (14-6, 9-2 NWC) trailed 13–10 after the first quarter but flipped the game with a 14–6 second period, using Baker's interior scoring and Montgomery's perimeter threat to take a 24–19 lead into halftime. Whitman stretched the margin to as many as 10 in the third quarter and led 34–31 after three quarters, then closed the night with a composed fourth quarter in which Montgomery scored seven points and Whitman went 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-3 at the line.

Whitman's defense held Whitworth to 33.3 percent shooting overall and just 2-for-16 from three-point range, limiting the Pirates to six points in both the second and fourth quarters. Ashlyn Peterson led Whitworth with 15 points and eight rebounds, but the hosts committed 18 turnovers that Whitman turned into 17 points, helping the Blues control the tempo in a low-possession game.

Holly Morgan added six points and four rebounds for Whitman, while Jordan Leith and Kaella Peters contributed steady perimeter defense as the Blues matched the Bucs in the rebounding battle 34–34.

The Blues are home for a single game next weekend as they host the undefeated Linfield Wildcats on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 3:00 p.m.
