XC/Distance Track Whitman Head Coaching Career (since August 2010)

• Coached six individual qualifiers for the NCAA Division III Championship race, 13 NCAA All-West Region performers and numerous All-Northwest Conference runners
• In 2019, Whitney Rich placed fourth in the NCAA National Championships, placed first in the NCAA West Regionals and was named West Region Runner of the Year

• Whitman College Women’s Soccer (started in the fall of 1994)
• Listed as the winningest coach in the history of the women’s soccer program
• Whitman College track and field
• Logged six years as an assistant and 2 years as the head track coach

• Graduated from Whitman College in 1991 as an NAIA All-American in soccer
• Ran cross country and was a multi-sport track and field athlete at Richland High School

• Received a master’s degree in education
• A senior lecturer and the NCAA compliance officer in the Whitman athletics department
• Resides in Walla Walla with spouse Marqui and two sons, Kamron and Kooper
• Shields is a third-generation Whitman graduate, following the footsteps of his late grandfather (Frederick Shields, Sr. ’32) and his father (Fred Shields, Jr. ’56). His grandmother, Hazel Meiners Shields, also attended Whitma.
