John Barry joined the Whitman staff as Sports Communication Director in July 2018 after two and one-half years as the Sports Information Director at Regis College located outside of Boston.
Barry ventured into the Sport Communications field in 2007, where he was the Sports Information/Marketing Director at Hawaii Pacific University for four years. While at HPU, Barry was responsible for media relations and event management activities for HPU's 12 intercollegiate sports, and was named the 2009-2010 PacWest Conference Sports Information Director of the year.
After his time at HPU, Barry ventured into Division I athletics where he was the Assistant Media Relations Director at the University of Hawaii before he joined the Regis staff. While at Hawaii, he served twice as host media director for the NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournament and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic (men's basketball). He also was the Hawaii media liaison for the 2015 Los Angeles Lakers preseason training camp.
In addition to his experience in sports information and media relations, Barry also brings experience as a coach and teacher to the role. Barry was the assistant men's soccer coach at the University of Richmond for two years before moving back to the islands in 2004 where he was coaching a variety of levels. John holds diplomas from the NSCAA as a Level II Goalkeepers coach and an Advanced National Coaching diploma. Â
Originally from Honolulu, Barry earned his bachelor's degree from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, where he lettered all four years in soccer.  He earned his master's degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University.
