Polar Bears Splash By Men's Tennis Team

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Maine's Bowdoin College, a perennial NCAA Division III national power from the New England region, lived up to its reputation with a 6-3 Spring Break victory over the Whitman College men's tennis team Tuesday in Claremont, Calif.

Bowdoin, ranked No. 15 nationally, is just starting its season, improving to 1-1.

A somewhat fatigued Whitman club, ranked No. 19, was playing its fifth match in as many days and saw its season record fall to 9-5.

The Polar Bears broke on top with a pair of competitive victories in doubles. Whitman salvaged a team point at No. 2 doubles, where sophomore Jeff Tolman and senior Etienne Moshevich rolled to an 8-2 victory.

Senior Quin Miller and sophomore Matt Tesmond lost 8-6 at No. 3 doubles while junior Conor Holton-Burke and freshman Andrew La Cava fell 8-5 in the No. 1 match.

All six matches in singles were decided in straight sets.

Tolman picked up another team point at No. 4 singles, beating Nicholas Fenichell 6-3, 6-2.

Junior Adriel Borshansky posted Whitman's other team point at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Michael Power at No. 6.

Moshevich dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 3 singles. La Cava was close at No. 2, falling 6-4, 6-4.

In the featured match at No. 1 singles, nationally ranked Stephen Sullivan got past Holton-Burke 6-3, 6-3.

Senior Chris Bailey played for Whitman at No. 6 singles, losing to Chris Lord.

Whitman wraps up its Spring Break trip on Wednesday with a match against Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks.
