Box Score

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Heather Johns scored a game-high 24 points and Sarah Anderegg hauled in 14 rebounds as the eleventh-ranked Whitman women's basketball team improved to 3-0 in the early season with a 66-61 victory over the University of Redlands. The game was a first round matchup in the Hampton Inn Classic II, hosted by UC Santa Cruz.

Down by four points at the half, the Missionaries outscored the Bulldogs 38 to 29 in the second stanza. Whitman struggled from the field the entire game, shooting only 31.3 % (29.7 % in the first half) but outrebounded Redlands 47 to 37, holding an edge in second-chance points by 9.

"Things weren't falling but we executed down the stretch and crashed the boards," said Whitman head coach Michelle Ferenz. "We kept ourselves in it. Redlands played very well especially in the first half."

In addition to her 24 points, Johns added 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Anderegg tallied 13 points and had 3 assists. Meghan White added 9 points and 8 rebounds. Hailey Ann Maeda also had nine points.

Colleen Goeser was the Bulldogs' high scorer, totaling 21 points. Kameron Dage was the other Bulldog in double figures with 11.

The Missionaries were steady from the free throw line, making just under 70 % of their attempts -- 21 of 31. Redlands was 10 of 17.

All three of the Missionaries wins have come on the road. They knocked off No. 5 St. Thomas and Pomona-Pitzer in Spokane, and now Redlands in Santa Cruz. The Missionaries will face off against the Banana Slugs tomorrow at 3:30 pm. There will be no live streaming video of the game.
