TACOMA, Wash. – A late flurry of shots from the Whitman College attack fell short of answering a three-goal first half from the University of Puget Sound Sunday afternoon when the host Loggers finished off a 3-0 Northwest Conference men's soccer victory despite being out shot by the Missionaries over the final 20 minutes of action on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium.
Whitman (6-8, 3-6 NWC) generated but one shot during the opening 45 minutes while host Puget Sound (10-3-2, 7-1-2) racked up 10 shots and three goals. The final 45 minutes were a vastly different story, but just not fruitful for the Missionaries.
Marcos Medina got the Whitman attack rolling with a shot that was blocked by a UPS defender midway through the 59th minute. The teams then traded shots, with Missionaries goalkeeper
Stuart Ellsworth coming up with a save in the 73rd and 80th minutes, before Whitman began swarming around the UPS goal and goalie Nathan King.
A
Jose Beleche shot sailed wide in the 85th and
Clayton Over's shot was blocked at the 86:01 mark, but right after Over's shot
Paal Nilssen got off a shot on frame which required King to leap into action with his first save of the game.
A turnover gave possession back to Whitman which turned into a corner opportunity but
Bridger Sellegren's shot off the set piece was lifted just over the crossbar at 86:58. Sellegren registered the final shot of the game, late in the 89th, which King saved to preserve his shut out.
Over the final 20 minutes the Missionaries accumulated eight shots to only three by UPS. Unfortunately for the visitors those shots simply weren't able to find their way past King.
Puget Sound got the afternoon off with a quick goal, only 75 seconds into the game. Landon Gauthier converted a penalty kick to provide the hosts with an early lead. Gauthier scored again in the 20th and Cameron Lorek made it 3-0 with a score in the 42nd.
Ellsworth finished the afternoon with six saves including four in the first half when the Loggers rang up seven shots on goal of their 10 shots during the half. King earned the shut out for UPS after coming up with two stops.
Whitman entertains Linfield College and Pacific (Ore.) University at the Sherwood Athletic Fields for their next pair of match-ups. Linfield and the Missionaries square off Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. followed by a Sunday contest against Pacific, also slated for 2:30 p.m.
