Box Score WALLA WALLA, Wash. – A flurry of second-half goals led Whitman College's men's soccer team past host Walla Walla University in a 4-1 non-conference outing under the lights Tuesday at the WWU Soccer Field.
Noah Cavanaugh registered the equalizer and go-ahead goals for the Missionaries who had surprisingly entered the halftime break trailing by a goal.
Visiting Whitman (7-8) ended a two-game win streak by the Wolves (2-8) with the road victory. Early this season the Missionaries had downed a visiting WWU squad by a score of 6-0.
Cavanugh's tying goal came shortly after the halftime break.
Drew Edmonds drove toward the left post along the end line then lofted a short cross to Cavanaugh for an easy volley into the right side behind Wolves goalkeeper Josh Fry at the 49:58 mark.
Not even a minute later the Missionaries were pressuring again and forced a foul within the box. The penalty kick skidded off the left post to keep the score even but Cavanaugh was at it again early in the 58th, putting Whitman ahead with a shot off a pass from
Ben Freedman.
Late in the 59th it was
Clayton Over's turn to find the netting for Whitman. A set piece off a corner kick opportunity on the left brought the ball in tight for
Cobi Weyers who got off a shot that was blocked by a Wolves defender. The carom fell into Over's feet for an easy tap-in to push the score to 3-1.
The swarming Whitman attack, along with stronger play in the second 45 minutes from the midfield and defense, limited WWU to only three shots in the half after the home team had registered eight in the opening 45 minutes, drawing first blood at 29:34 on a goal by Brook Fesler.
Constant pressure led to the fourth goal for Whitman as a blocked shot from
Colin Faunt wasn't cleared well providing
Daniel Kim the chance to bury his easy volley inside the left post from eight yards out at the 89:19 mark of the chilly contest.
For the game Whitman out shot the Wolves by a 24-11 margin and racked up a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Milo Cantor earned the start in goal for Whitman, earning the win after coming up with three saves. Fry took the loss despite his six saves.
The Missionaries return to Northwest Conference action in their next outing, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on the Sherwood Athletic Fields against visiting George Fox University. Another league contest follows on Sunday with Whitman and Pacific (Ore.) University squaring off at 2:30 p.m.
