Late Audino goal evens score in tie at L&C

PORTLAND, Ore. – A goal from Danielle Audino in the final minute of regulation pulled visiting Whitman College even with Lewis & Clark College, and goalkeeper Haley Case helped the Missionaries preserve the tie over a pair of extra periods as Whitman and the host Pioneers settled for a 1-1 double-overtime deadlock Saturday morning at Griswold Stadium in Northwest Conference women's soccer action.

Case finished the game with seven saves for Whitman (8-7-3, 6-5-3 NWC) including a diving stop 65 seconds into the game and two more saves on back-to-back shots midway through the second extra period.

Lewis & Clark broke a 0-0 halftime score in the 63rd minute with an unassisted goal by Megan Ratfield.

The Pioneers deterred Whitman from registering a shot for the next 17 minutes before Alissa Soo's strike sailed wide at the start of the 80th.

The Missionaries generated corner kick opportunities at 82:16 and 88:52 but were unable to create a shot off of either set piece. Soo finally got a shot on frame at 88:56 but L&C goalie Geena Fong came up with the stop, temporarily keeping the Pioneers in front with the game clock winding toward its final ticks.

The final horn wouldn't come soon enough for Lewis & Clark, though.

Audino's shot from 30 yards out found Fong out of position just enough to prevent the goalkeeper from stopping the ball from slipping into the top corner of the frame at the 89:16 mark, pulling Whitman even with less than a minute left in regulation.

Both teams generated one shot in the first overtime period but only Whitman's from Clara Merlino was on goal. Fong registered a save on the shot in the 98th, helping to send the game into a second extra stanza.

Lewis & Clark owned an edge in possession during the second 10-minute period, accumulating four shots to none from Whitman. Case was called into action on two of the four shots, coming up with saves 20 seconds apart in the 106th minute to allow the Missionaries to escape the situation still tied with the host Pioneers.

Fong concluded the contest with three saves for Lewis & Clark.

Whitman continues Northwest Conference action Sunday in Salem, Oregon, with a trip to Willamette University for an 11 a.m. contest against the Bearcats.
