Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Gregg Petcoff

Another Tiger tamed

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second day in a row Whitman College's women's basketball team squared off with a team of Tigers. And for the second day in a row the Missionaries came away with a demonstrative victory, downing host Colorado College by a score of 77-55 at the Tigers' Reid Arena. Whitman scored the opening four points of the game in leading from start to finish, just as it had Friday with an 18-point win over Iowa Wesleyan College.

Heather Johns (14 points), Emily Rommell (14) and Chelsi Brewer (10) each reached double-figures for Whitman (3-2) while Colorado's Malia Shappell finished with a game-high 15 points for the Tigers (0-6) in the loss.

Rommell opened the scoring Saturday with a layup which was followed by a jumper from Hallie Buse for a quick 4-0 lead before the home crowd could settle into their seats.

The Tigers inched within a point, 8-7, at the 16:38 mark but a Rommell layup kicked off an 8-0 run, concluded by an Alysse Ketner layup, that provided the breathing room that would only grow over the remainder of the contest.

By halftime the Whitman advantage was 33-16 and in the second half the lead hit 20 on a Johns layup with 16 to play, and then 30 on another Ketner layup with 6:50 remaining.

The layup was a common thread throughout the game for the Whitman offense which scored 48 of its 77 points from within the paint. The Missionaries' defense made things much harder for CC as the Tigers were forced outside all afternoon, netting just 12 points from in close in the paint.

Strength on the glass was also on display throughout the rout as Whitman rolled up a 47-34 rebounding edge led by Katie Gray's eight boards.

The Missionaries return to Walla Walla for their next games, making the short trip down the road to Walla Walla University on December 4 for a non-conference match-up against the Wolves before returning to the Sherwood Athletics Center on Dec. 6 to face visiting Lewis-Clark (Idaho) State in another non-conference contest.
