Express denied passage by M's

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Jackson Clough scored a game-high 25 points, which included a 4-for-8 performance from three-point range, to lead Whitman to a 120-61 victory over visiting Wells College in a non-conference men's basketball game Sunday night on George Ball Court at the Sherwood Athletics Center.

Clough was one of seven Missionary athletes to reach double-figures. Christian McDonald and Rolaun Dunham scored 17 points each, Matt Mounier added 14, Philip Chircu bagged 13, Peter French threw in 12 and Tim Howell registered 10.

French, registering a double-double, grabbed 17 rebounds to help Whitman fashion an upper hand of 54-39 on the glass.

The triumph left the Missionaries, who eclipsed the 100-point barrier for the third time this season, with an overall record of 5-3 and dropped their Aurora, N.Y.-based opponent to 1-8 on the season.

Whitman commenced its derailing of the Express in the first five minutes of play courtesy of a 15-6 salvo. McDonald led the way with seven points. French ended the surge with a layin at the 15:06 mark.

The Missionaries put further distance between themselves and Wells later in the half. Following a bucket by Express guard Joe Walton, an 18-0 run -- highlighted by four 3-point field goals -- increased Whitman's advantage to 25, 33-8, with 10:28 remaining before halftime. Clough stroked a pair of treys while McDonald and Dunham contributed one apiece during the blitz.

The margin continued to swell throughout the period and hit its peak with 31 seconds on the clock when Howell turned an Express turnover into a transition layup that raised Whitman's lead to 42, 68-26.

The Missionaries led 68-29 at halftime.

Clough led a trio of Whitman players in double figs with 16 points in the opening frame. Dunham and McDonald chipped in with 14 and 12, respectively.

The Missionaries continued to play add-on in the second half. Reserve Cheney Doane provided the final tally of the evening - a layin 1:30 away from the final buzzer.

James Feocco led Wells with 17 points.

Whitman concludes its brief pre-holiday homestand Monday when it hosts Marian (Wisc.) University at 7 p.m.
