WALLA WALLA, Wash. – An 11-0 run one minute into the game effectively put the game on ice Saturday evening as Whitman College breezed to a 117-71 non-conference men's basketball victory over visiting Walla Walla University at the Sherwood Athletics Center.
Christian McDonald and
Jackson Clough shared game-high scoring honors for the Missionaries with 20 points apiece as six players reached double-digits during the win.
The victory improves Whitman's record to 4-2 while the loss keeps the Wolves (0-10) winless on the season.
Evan Martin, who finished with 16 points, provided Whitman with its first lead, dropping in a layup shortly after the opening tip. The Wolves answered with a three-pointer from Jordan Collins for the first lead change of the game, followed the second -- and last -- lead change on a
Dominic Lippi trey to push the Missionaries back in front, 5-3.
Luke Spady drained a mid-range jumper to tie the score for WWU but that would be one of the last highlights for the Wolves as Whitman took command with an 11-0 run over the next 2 minutes and 39 seconds, then added on a 16-7 run that pushed the advantage to 33-16 with eight minutes still to play in the first half. The Missionaries would eventually double up WWU entering the halftime break, 66-33.
That gargantuan lead dipped to 31 a couple of times early in second-half action before rolling into the 40s over much of the rest of the contest.
McDonald sparked the Whitman offense over the initial 20 minutes, scoring all of his points during the half with 7-for-10 shooting from the floor which included 4-of-5 from behind the three-point line. He handed the baton off to Clough at the break, apparently, as Clough logged 18 of his 20 points during the second 20 minutes, a half of play that included 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
For the night Whitman hit 16-of-27 (59 percent) from long range, helping the Missionaries finish with a 62-percent night from the floor. They were also nearly perfect from the foul line, knocking down 19-of-21 (91 percent) attempts from the stripe.
Joining McDonald, Clough and Martin in double-figures were
JoJo Wiggins (14 points),
Philip Chircu (13) and Lippi (13), who was also a spark in the defensive end of the court as he piled up six of the team's 14 steals.
That Whitman defense forced 20 turnovers, flipping the miscues into 24 points.
Luke Spady and Tyreek Luckett each posted 18 points for the Wolves in the loss. Josh Hough also scored in double-figures adding 13 points.
Next up for Whitman is another non-conference tilt as the Missionaries welcome Warner Pacific (Ore.) College to Sherwood Saturday for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
