WALLA WALLA, Wash. –
Hailey Ann Maeda's double-double and
Hailey McDonald's buzzer-beating three-pointer sent Whitman College's women's basketball team into overtime against visiting Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) College, but the host Missionaries were out scored in the extra period leading to Saturday evening's 72-65 non-conference loss to the NAIA Warriors at the Sherwood Athletics Center.
The loss ends a Whitman (4-3) four-game win streak while extending a Lewis-Clark (11-1) win streak to seven.
Coming out of the halftime break Whitman slipped in front, 27-26, on a Maeda jumper from 10-feet out. The Warriors answered with a basket of their own but Maeda dropped in a 12-footer from the left corner to lift Whitman in front, 29-28.
Lewis-Clark responded this time with a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to seize control. The Warriors built their advantage to as large as eight several times during the half but Whitman continued to rally, pulling within two with seven minutes remaining, again with 1:35 to go, and once again with 48 seconds left on another Maeda jumper from the left corner that trimmed the deficit to 60-58.
A foul with 11 seconds remaining sent L-C's Tanis Fuller to the foul line where she sank just the second of two to keep Whitman within a basket.
Heather Johns calmly brought the ball up court for the Missionaries and eventually found McDonald deep in the right corner. With the horn looming McDonald launched a bomb that hit the front edge of the rim, bounced up then came down through the netting as the buzzer sounded to rescue Whitman, at least temporarily.
The Warriors registered the initial five points of overtime -- including a three-pointer from Caelyn Orlandi who finished the night 4-for-5 from behind the arc -- to take a 66-61 lead.
Chelsi Brewer dropped in a pair of free throws to pull Whitman within three but a Brooke Litalien trey ignited a 6-0 burst from the Warriors over the next two minutes that iced the game for the visitors.
Lewis-Clark drained 10-of-18 three-point attempts for a 56-percent night from long range, and accumulated 16 points off turnovers to help hold off Whitman's rallies. The Missionaries got 21 points from their bench, out scored the Warriors 22-10 from within the paint and out rebounded the visitors by a 49-41 margin, but hit only 16 of 25 free throws (64 percent) and were just 3-of-11 from behind the arc during the loss.
Maeda's 21 points and 10 rebounds paced Whitman while Brewer added 13 points and Johns chipped in with 10. Fuller's game-high 22 points led a trio of scorers in double figures for L-C. Orlandi finished with 18 points and Litalien, who was 3-for-5 from behind the three-point line, scored 11.
Whitman picks back up with a pair of non-conference games Saturday and Sunday to close out the non-league portion of its schedule. A rematch with Walla Walla University on Saturday followed by a Sunday contest against Corban (Ore.) University are Whitman's opponents during the Missionaries-hosted Kim Evanger Raney Classic at Sherwood on December 13-14.
