SPOKANE - No. 14 nationally-ranked and Northwest Conference-leading Whitman suited up just six players for its league counter with Whitworth
Wednesday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
No worries.

The Missionary six contributed victories in both singles and doubles in a 9-0 plundering of the Pirates.

Whitman, currently rated fourth in the West region, is now 10-0 in the NWC and 13-3 overall.

Whitworth, No. 18 in the West, slipped to 5-5 and 6-9.

A pair of Missionary doubles duos prevailed by 8-6 scores. Andy Riggs and Steven Roston pulled off the feat at No. 1 while Andrew La Cava and Parker Silverman did it in second doubles.

"It was 6-6 when we got our first break," Riggs said. "It was neck and neck to the last second."

"It's always tough to play at Whitworth," Riggs said. "The altitude makes a big difference."

Colton Malesovas and James Rivers came through at No. 3 doubles by an 8-5 tally.

Silverman, at No. 6, was involved in the day's tightest singles match. After splitting a pair of 6-4 decisions in the first two sets, Silverman edged his way to a 12-10 triumph in set three.

Whitman's one through five singles athletes - Malesovas, La Cava, Roston, Riggs, and Rivers - lost just 20 games total on their way to straight-set victories.

"I thought I played well," Malesovas said of his singles contest. "It was good to get out there and win a close match."

"It was a good experience," La Cava said of the day's proceedings. "We were all in school mode. After the long ride, there wasn't any time to relax and get ready. It was good to see everyone come out fired up and ready to play."

"Whitworth is a hard place to play," Malesovas said. "It was encouraging to play in circumstances like that and get a 9-0 victory."

"It was nice to take care of business and get out of there," Riggs said.

Whitman hosts NAIA representative Lewis-Clark State Friday at 3 p.m.
