Natalia Zea and
Shae Kanakaole each posted a team-high eight kills and
Hannah Linsenmayer came up with a match-high 21 digs in Whitman College's 3-0 victory Friday night at the University of Puget Sound in both teams' Northwest Conference volleyball opener.
The Missionaries (5-5, 1-0 NWC) swept the Loggers (1-9, 0-1) for the second straight time after another 3-0 road victory in early November of the 2013 season.
All three games Friday night in Memorial Field House featured Whitman runs that provided leads that would hold up for wins.
Tied at 15-15 in the opener Whitman gained the advantage on a Zea kill then stretched the lead with two more points on UPS attacking errors. The Missionaries would not trail after Zea's kill and would go on to take Game 1 by a score of 25-23.
Early action in Game 2 saw five ties before consecutive kills from
Abby Seethoff, Kanakaole and Zea broke open a 6-6 deadlock and allowed Whitman to carry a lead all the way through to another 25-23 victory.
Friday's clinching game was over early as
Megan Bafus pulled Whitman even at 3-3 with a kill, followed by a service ace from Linsenmayer, a Kanakaole kill, a Logger attacking error and a Zea kill. The Missionaries maintained the lead over the remainder of the game and cashed in the match win with a 25-18 third-set victory.
Zea added a pair of service aces, two digs and three block assists in the Whitman win. Seethoff added in seven kills while
Anna Dawson set up the attack with a team-best 25 assists. Seethoff and Kanakaole trailed only Linsenmayer in digs with both coming up with 12 on the night, and Seethoff tallied six block assists for team-high honors.
Puget Sound's attack was led by Shawn Smith who registered a match-best 10 kills in the loss.
Whitman continues its weekend road trip to Tacoma on Saturday with a Northwest Conference match against Pacific Lutheran University at 5 p.m.
