SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The final match of the 2014 Slugfest Tournament left Whitman College's women's soccer team heartbroken as Cal Lutheran University stole a win with a goal in the last minute of the second overtime to down the Missionaries, 2-1, Monday afternoon in a non-conference battle at host UC Santa Cruz's Lower East Field.

Whitman's record evens at 2-2 for the season with the loss while the win allows the Regals to pull up to a 2-2-1 mark.

A scoreless first half saw just four shots with only one finding its way on frame. Missionaries goalkeeper Haley Case came up with the lone stop of the half on a CLU header in the 21st minute.

The Regals put another shot on goal early in second half action with Case again coming up with the save. Two minutes later a Cal Lutheran corner kick resulted in a scramble in front of the Whitman goal and the Regals' Alli Calabrese was able to tuck a shot inside the post after a short pass from teammate Charlotte Rosen at the 50:56 mark for the first goal of the game.

The Missionaries went on the attack quickly after the Calabrese tally, getting a header on frame from Brianna Brown -- who scored the game-winner in the final minute Sunday for Whitman -- but CLU goalie Coral Hasley was in position for the save. Whitman swarmed around the net after Hasley's save, producing four set pieces off corner kicks over the next few minutes. Danielle Wieck finally found the equalizer for Whitman, scoring in the 68th off a feed from Lena de Guzman.

The pressure mounted, but it was almost all from Whitman as it pressed forward in the final minutes producing four shots in a span of 2 minutes and 38 seconds, only to come away empty handed in regulation time.

Whitman registered the only shot on goal in the first overtime period with de Guzman forcing Hasley to take action again with a save not even 90 seconds into the period.

The second overtime also produced few scoring opportunities until Whitman notched back-to-back shots six minutes in, but the first was blocked by a Cal Lutheran defender and the second sailed just over the crossbar.

Calabrese played the hero role for the Regals late in the second OT finding the back of the net for her second goal of the game, this one coming with 56 seconds remaining on the scoreboard.

Case finished with three saves in the loss while CLU's Hasley came up with a pair of stops.

"It's unfortunate to see a game end this way for our women, but we were the recipient of that type of good fortune (Sunday)," said Whitman head coach Laura Williamson. "I was happy with the way we played over this trip. We're playing good soccer, and after playing our first two games without the first-year players due to orientation commitments, it's good to see our full squad out there and to see them putting some things together as a group. That's going to be big for us as we begin conference play."

The Missionaries open Northwest Conference play with their next outing, the team's home opener on Saturday, Sept. 13 against Whitworth University at 6 p.m. on the Whitman Athletic Fields.
