Pirates come out on top in battle of the Whits

Spokane, Wash. — Jessica Kramer posted a double-double — 19 points and 13 rebounds — to lead nationally-ranked Whitworth to a 59-52 victory over defending Northwest Conference champion Whitman in a women's collegiate basketball game Tuesday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates improved to 3-0 in the conference and 12-0 overall, marking the first time since the 2004-05 season that a Whitworth women's basketball team has commenced a season by winning its first 12 games.

The Missionaries, who entered the night in a four-way tie atop the NWC with the Pirates, George Fox and Pacific, slipped to 2-1 and 7-5.

Hailey Ann Maeda led Whitman with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and a 5-for-6 effort at the free throw line. Reigning conference Player of the Year Heather Johns scored 16 for the Missionaries.

"I was proud of our effort," Whitman coach Michelle Ferenz said. "Hailey Ann Maeda played very well."

Both teams struggled through a defensive-minded first half that ended with the score knotted at 25-25. Whitman shot 33 percent (9-of-27) in half one while Whitworth managed just a 32-percent showing (8-of-25). The Missionaries and Pirates both attempted seven three-point shots with the lone make going to the visitors.
Whitman turned the ball over 13 times in the first half and Whitworth coughed the ball up on a dozen occasions.

Heather Lovelace kept the Missionaries close with seven points while Johns added six. The teams each had 20 rebounds in the opening frame. Alysse Ketner aided Whitman's competitiveness on the glass with six caroms.

Tuesday's contest stayed tight throughout and was only a two-possession game in the closing minutes of play before Whitworth's Katara Belton-Sharp nailed a trey with 1:32 remaining to give the Pirates a seven-point lead, 57-50.

"We did not execute as well as we needed to," Ferenz said. "We defended very well, but we have to be better offensively."

Free throws were a critical factor in Whitworth's triumph. The Pirates made 21-of-30 tries and the Missionaries cashed in 11-of-14.

Whitman's next outing comes Saturday when it hosts Linfield for a league encounter at 4 p.m.
