Whitman Keeps Pirates at Bay

Whitman and Whitworth played to a scoreless double OT tie Wednesday night at Whitman College

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College's women's soccer team hosted Whitworth University on the lone Wednesday night game of the season for the Missionaries. The teams played to a scoreless tie in the Northwest Conference contest at the Whitman College Athletic Complex. Five different Missionary players recorded a shot on goal and the defense stayed strong throughout the night.

The Whitties accumulated 21 shots, nine on goal, over the 110-minute match, both numbers equal season-highs for the Missionaries. Whitman's defense played astounding, the Pirates took 18 shots in the contest, but the defense, led by goalkeeper Haley Case, stood strong against the Whitworth attack.

Whitman (1-8-4, 1-4-4 NWC) had an opportunity to take an early lead in the 14th minute; Alissa Soo dribbled up the end line and took a shot that was saved by Whitworth (5-7-1, 3-5-1 NWC) goalkeeper, Andrea Stump. The Pirates had three shots on goal in the first half, but Whitman's, Case held her ground collecting three saves.

For a majority of the latter part of the half the Missionaries played on the attack, taking four shots in a 13-minute span. Whitman's Brianna Brown had the best look on a shot in the 33rd, but again Stump gathered the save keeping the game scoreless entering the break. The Missionaries took five shots in the first half, two of which came on goal.

Both teams came out hot on the offensive side, combining for 20 shots in the half, 12 coming from the Missionaries. However, Case and Stump proved to be better through regulation as the game entered a scoreless overtime. Of Whitman's six shots on goal in the second half, the best opportunity coming in the 81st with Soo firing a shot that was saved by Stump.

With time winding down in the final minutes of the second overtime, Whitworth had one final opportunity, but Whitman's defense proved to be better, keeping the Pirates off the board in a scoreless tie.

Whitman travels this upcoming weekend to Pacific University and George Fox University before returning home on October 24 and 25.
