NEWBERG, Ore. - The uniforms will need washing, and the Wheeler Sports Center floor may never be shinier after Whitman College's volleyball team came up with an astounding 96 digs in its Northwest Conference match at George Fox University. But the host Bruins rallied from behind in the fourth game to steal a win and seal a 3-1 victory over the visiting Missionaries Saturday evening.
Whitman (4-14, 2-10 NWC) had battled back from a two-game deficit to roll to a game-three win without trailing. The momentum continued into the fourth game where it owned the advantage until late when Fox (6-14, 3-9) finally pushed in front for the first time since the second game before finishing off the match victory by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 21-25 and 26-24.
Hannah Linsenmayer,
Codie Conching and
Shae Kanakaole were remarkable defensively for Whitman. Linsenmayer led all defenders with 26 digs while Conching added 19 and Kanakaole had 17. Linsenmayer also added three service aces within a match which saw the Missionaries total nine aces from behind the serving line.
Kanakaole was the match leader in kills, pounding down 14 on the night to spur the Whitman attack.
The deciding factors of the night may have been a combination of 36 attacking errors on Whitman's side and the 16.0 blocks from Fox's side of the tape. The Bruins' Erin Dellinger accumulated 10 block assists, equaling the Missionaries' team total.
Whitman returns to the friendlier confines of Sherwood Athletics Center for its next matches, taking on Linfield College Friday at 7 p.m. and Pacific (Ore.) University at 5 p.m. the following night.
