Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Gregg Petcoff

Full roster sees floor time in 111-73 win

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – There was very little drama Saturday evening in Sherwood Athletics Center as head coach Eric Bridgeland went 14 deep -- the length of his dressed roster -- to put 36 different combinations out on the floor in Whitman College's 111-73 non-conference victory against visiting California Institute of Technology. Tim Howell led four Whitties into double figures, pocketing a game-high 21 points in about 21 minutes of action.

The win lifts Whitman's record to 2-0 while Caltech drops to 1-2.

Howell, Philip Chircu (13 points), Jack Stewart (13) and Christian McDonald (11) spearheaded the offense but the foursome were not alone as all 14 players scored and 12 tallied at least five points in the runaway victory.

Whitman's full-court hounding defense forced 30 Caltech turnovers and the Whitties turned those chances into 31 points. In comparison, the Beavers netted just five points off 17 Whitman miscues.

The battle on the glass turned out to be not so much as the Whitties commanded the area around the baskets ripping down 40 rebounds to Caltech's 26. That plus-14 advantage helped Whitman put up 15 second-chance points while limiting the Beavers to just five on the night.

The visitors scored the opening basket of the game, on a David LeBaron jumper, but a driving layup from McDonald evened the score one minute later and a Chircu 3-pointer that followed soon after pushed the Whitties ahead in what would be the only lead change of the contest.

By the time Caltech reached double digits, at the 10:04 mark of the half, Whitman owned a 21 point lead. And by the time the teams headed for their locker rooms at the break the Whitties had extended their advantage to 31 at 62-31.

Bench emptying wasn't just a second-half occurrence, though, as Bridgeland began feeding his bench minutes early on in the first half. Of the 36 difference five-player combinations he used, many consisted of three or four first-year players and over the games final minutes all the players on the court for Whitman were the program's newcomers.

The night was gold for Bridgeland in the plus/minus column as 13 players finished on the plus side. Chircu ended up a plus-31 (points by Whitman vs. points for Caltech), McDonald was a plus-28, Howell finished at plus-22, Peter French at plus-19 and the fifth starter, Tochi Oti was at plus-7.

And though he finished with just two points, first-year Montez White registered seven assists to just one measly turnover.

Whitman will try to continue its season-opening win streak on the road over the break, traveling south for the Mission Inn Thanksgiving Classic hosted by UC Santa Cruz. The Whitties take on the host team on Nov. 27 followed by a match-up the next day against Cal Lutheran.
