4th quarter run cements victory

PORTLAND, Ore. – It got a little dicey as the fourth quarter started but Hailey Ann Maeda put Whitman College on her back, scoring the first six points of a 16-0 run that finished off a 62-47 non-conference victory over host Warner Pacific College in women's basketball action Wednesday evening at C.C. Perry Gym.

The victory keeps Whitman unbeaten at 4-0 to start the season while the Knights (3-1) -- who downed Division I Portland State in an exhibition game less than five days ago -- suffered their first loss.

Whitman never trailed in Wednesday's game, steadily building its lead over the opening two quarters to eventually take a 31-20 advantage into the halftime break.

The third 10-minute quarter was Warner Pacific's best, though, as it chipped away at the Whitman lead until pulling within four, 43-39, at the end of the period.

A jumper by the Knights' Brett Larson in the early moments of the fourth drew the home team within two points of the Whitties who re-gained some distance on their next possession on a layup and one from Casey Poe.

Warner Pacific dropped in a jumper to pull back within three but that was as close as it would get with Maeda taking over the game. Her jumper started the 16-point run, but that wasn't enough as she collected the defensive rebound at the other end of the court then added another jumper after the transition.

The two teams, surprisingly, went scoreless over the next three minutes but another Maeda jumper ignited the Whitman scoring as it rolled in the next 10 points. Poe followed Maeda's jumper with another layup and then Chelsi Brewer drained a 3-pointer followed by a trey from Poe. A pair of free throws completed the run in the final minute.

The Knights scored one final bucket in the closing seconds but Whitman's offense and defense had done too much damage in Warner Pacific's 7 minute, 59 second scoreless bout.

Poe, Maeda and Alysse Ketner each finished in double figures in scoring for Whitman. Poe tied WP's Kendra Preuninger for game-high totals as each scored 14 points for their teams. Maeda and Ketner chimed in with 13 apiece.

The Whitties won the rebounding battle, 30-25, in part due to Sierra McGarity's game-high seven boards.

Only seven players scored for Whitman but its 57 percent night from the floor from those seven proved to be quite good enough.

The Whitties return home for their next outing on Friday, Dec. 4, taking on visiting Linfield College at 6 p.m. in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams.
