PORTLAND, Ore. - Whitman College's two-match win streak was halted Friday evening by Lewis & Clark College as the host Pioneers streaked to a 3-0 win over the Missionaries in Northwest Conference volleyball action at the Pamplin Sports Center.
Whitman (6-15, 4-11 NWC) entered the penultimate game of the season following home victories last weekend while the Pios (10-12, 7-8) had won just one of its past five matches. Recent history proved unimportant, though, as L&C maintained the advantage throughout most of its 25-21, 25-18 and 25-17 wins.
The opener saw the Pios slip in front early but Whitman was able to battle back to force six tie scores, the latest at 15-15 after erasing a five-point deficit, but L&C pulled away after that final tie to steal Game 1.
A 6-3 Missionaries advantage in the second game melted away with the home team finally wresting away the lead at 8-7 and holding on to inch within a game of the match victory.
Lewis & Clark broke in front early in the third but Whitman rallied to take leads at 11-10 and again at 12-11 but with the score tied at 13-13 the Pios finally broke free of the pesky visitors to close out the game and match.
Megan Henry led Whitman's attack with seven kills and received help at the net from
Abby Seethoff (six kills) and
Natalia Zea (five). Seethoff also played a role defensively above the tape with a solo block and a pair of block assists. Zea also chipped in with a pair of block assists.
In the back court
Hannah Linsenmayer came up with 17 digs to lead Whitman.
Anna Dawson picked up 10 digs on the night and led the Missionaries with 17 set assists.
The 2015 Whitman season concludes Saturday at Willamette University with a 6 p.m. conference match against the host Bearcats.
