NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Whitman College's women's basketball team completed an unbeaten run at the Music City Classic by closing out a 57-39 victory over Penn State - Behrend with a strong second half Wednesday evening, getting 15 points from
Casey Poe and 11 more from
Chelsi Brewer in the 18-point non-conference win.
The victory over the Lions (4-6) left Whitman with a 9-1 record after it downed No. 16 Williams (Mass.) College Tuesday afternoon at the 10-team Classic.
The Whitties came out of the halftime break Wednesday with an eight-point advantage and improved their cushion to 11 in the third quarter, a defensive 10-minute span that saw the teams combine for only 15 points. Whitman found its offense in the final quarter with 17 points while limiting Penn State to 10 to race away from the Lions in that final stanza.
Early action differed from second-half play as leads of no more than four points amidst a pair of lead changes filled in the play-by-play of the opening 10 minutes. Whitman's 15-12 advantage to start the second slipped away as the Lions gained the lead at 19-17 not even three minutes into the quarter.
Hailey McDonald's 3-pointer off a Maegan Martin assist on Whitman's next time down the court, though, pushed the Whitties back in front and they would maintain a lead that grew and grew over the remainder of the contest.
Dani Reinwald of Penn State registered a double-double in the loss, posting a 21-point, 10-rebound performance into the book. Whitman's defense limited the rest of the Lions' attack as just five other players from Penn State scored with none netting more than five points.
Whitman's bench reeled off 22 points to only two from non-starters along the Penn State bench.
Northwest Conference play commences with Whitman's next contest, a 6 p.m. game at Whitworth University on Wednesday, January 5.
