WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College lost a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon, falling in the final game of the season 2-0, to Pacific University. The Boxers (19-18, 12-12 NWC) scored what proved to be the game winning run in the third inning, but added a security run in the eighth. The Missionaries (6-28, 5-19 NWC) bid farewell to five seniors on the team,
MacLean Harned,
Jonny Chow,
Peter Carmichael,
Will Thompson, and
Jack Coppinger all played their final games this weekend at Borleske Stadium.
Â
The first opportunity to score came in the second inning for the Missionaries.
Paul Heywood stood on third base with Joe Zimmer at second and just one out. Senior,
MacLean Harned lined a rocket back at Pacific pitcher Colin McCusker, who caught line drive and threw Heywood out at third to get out of the inning.
Â
The Boxers got on the board first in the top of the third when a lead-off hit and a walk allowed Pacific to score on a base hit into right field by Matt Hopp. The Whits were not able to answer in the third, but got a promising look in the fourth when
Anthony Lim led off the inning with a single up the middle and stole second. After back-to-back pop outs to the infield, the hope of scoring began to diminish. A groundout by Zimmer ended the inning and the game entered the fifth inning with the Missionaries trailing, 1-0.
Â
Opportunity knocked again in the fifth inning. Whitman saw runners on second and third with just one out, but again was unable to bring a run across the plate. A strikeout and a foul out concluded the inning with the Missionaries still trailing the Boxers.
Â
After Whitman left runners on second and third in the seventh inning. Pacific added to their lead in the top of the eighth scoring an unearned run with two outs. In the bottom half of the inning, in what proved to be his final at-bat at Whitman, Senior
Jonny Chow, singled into right field to start the inning. Unfortunately, a double-play two batters later, ended the inning and the Whits remained scoreless through eight.
