Whitman Drops Opener to Lewis & Clark College

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College was unable to convert hits into runs Friday afternoon, falling to Lewis and Clark College, 2-1. After a two-run third inning by the Pioneers, Whitman was unable to answer the call. The Northwest Conference loss at Borleske Stadium narrowed the gap to one game between the Missionaries and Pioneers within the conference standings.

The Missionaries (5-19, 4-12 NWC) were able to collect ten hits throughout the afternoon but left ten runners on base. Pitching for Whitman was stellar, allowing Lewis and Clark (6-25, 3-13)  just four hits. Unfortunately the Pioneers turned back-to-back hits into two runs in the third inning. The Missionaries responded in the bottom of the third with a run of their own, cutting the Lewis and Clark lead to one; a lead that would remain throughout the afternoon.

Jonny Chow contributed the only run of the afternoon for Whitman, when he scored on Nick Johnson's sacrifice fly in the third. Anthony Lim and Braden Hussey were the only two Missionaries to accumulate multiple hits throughout the game, both finished 2-for-4 with no extra base hits.

It seemed as if Whitman was ready to tie the game up and possibly take the lead in the seventh inning when Joseph Zimmer reached on an error, but then found himself on third base with just one out after a single by Nick Johnson. Team captain, Paul Heywood, who was limited due to injury, and first baseman Tristan Cates were unable to bring Zimmer in from 90 feet away. That proved to be the last breath for the Missionaries who collected just one hit in six batters over the final two innings.

Lewis and Clark lead-off batter Bradley Lezak accounted for three of the five Pioneers hits, knocking in an RBI and scored one of the two runs in the third inning. The only other hits Lewis and Clark saw came in the thrid inning from Ben Beck and Eric Hyun, who hit a single and double respectively. Beck scored on a Lezak triple into right field and Hyun collected an RBI with a doulbe into left. Outside of third inning, the Missionaries' pitching was astounding, collecting nine strikeouts and allowing just two hits.

Whitman's starting pitcher Robert Maislin threw six full innings, surrending the two runs in the third and five overall hits. Maislin collected four strikeouts and walked just one batter all afternoon. Garrett Atkinson, who relieved Maislin in the seventh, allowed zero runs and no hits through three full innings. The Pioneers' pitcher Ryan Strombom collected his first win of the season by finding his way out of trouble and collecting outs.

The Missionaries and the Pioneers will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon; the games are scheduled for a 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. start times at Borleske Stadium.
