CALDWELL, Idaho - That one extra hit was absent for Whitman College Wednesday afternoon as the Missionaries stranded 20 in a pair of non-conference baseball losses to host College of Idaho at Wolfe Field. The Coyotes took the opener with a 9-1, 7-inning victory, then completed their sweep with a 14-1, 9-inning win in the nightcap.
Whitman (6-22) put two runners on the base paths six times against the Yotes (27-15) in Game 1 then followed that by putting two runners on five times in Game 2. The Missionaries also equaled Idaho with six hits in the opener and collected 10 hits in the second loss.
Jonny Chow,
Joseph Zimmer and
Tristan Cates registered a multi-hit game for Whitman in the nightcap with Chow's fourth-inning single to left field pushing home the lone run.
Nick Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with a walk in Game 1 singled home Whitman's run in Game 1.
Unearned runs played an unfortunate role in Wednesday's results making the oh-so-close situation when at the plate even more problematic. Two of the Yotes' five runs in the bottom of the third were unearned in the opener and four of the initial five runs Idaho scored in Game 2 were also unearned.
The Missionaries leap back into Northwest Conference play with their next outing, a three-game set at 24th-ranked Linfield College on Saturday and Sunday.
