Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Gregg Petcoff

Overtime heartbreak in opener

CALDWELL, Idaho – Whitman College's women's soccer team received three saves from goalkeeper Cassidy Brewin in her first collegiate start but a rebound off a shot that had hit the crossbar was unkind to Brewin and the Missionaries as host College of Idaho knocked in the carom for the game-winning goal in the Coyotes' 1-0 double-overtime non-conference victory Tuesday evening at Simplot Stadium.

The season opener for Whitman tilted Idaho's way in the early going as the Coyotes registered the first five shots of the game. Perhaps Brewin's biggest save in regulation time came only 42 seconds into the game when Idaho's Erika Thompson broke free for a one-on-on against Brewin who came up with a save on Thompson's shot from just inside the 18 mark.

Clara Merlino finally put Whitman on the stat sheet with a shot that sailed just wide of the post in the early moments of the 43rd minute. The Missionaries were able to regain possession late resulting in another shot, this one taken by Kelsey Peck but saved by Idaho keeper Brittany Houghton with 45 seconds remaining in the scoreless first half.

Second-half action saw an increase of offensive zone possessions resulting in more shots for both teams but Brewin and Houghton, or off-target shots, kept the scoreboard quiet and locked at 0-0 through the 90-minute mark.

Whitman seemed to have the better of play in the first overtime, generating three corner kicks -- vs. none for Idaho -- and a 2-1 advantage in shots. But it was the Coyotes who came closest to ending the game during the first 10-minute session with an Aurora Ostolasa header that Brewin kept out of the goal in the 99th.

The back-breaker for Whitman came in the fifth minute of the second OT period when Idaho's Hailey Woods put one off the crossbar and the rebound was collected by Summer Jackson who poked a shot behind Brewin to end the contest.

Whitman returns home for its next outing, hosting the Whitman Soccer Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5-6. Carroll (Mont.) College squares off against Whitworth in the Saturday game followed Sunday by contest between Carroll and the Missionaries.
