Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Gregg Petcoff

Tying goal elusive for women’s soccer

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Cassidy Brewin came up with three saves and the Missionaries totaled 11 shots Sunday afternoon against visiting Carroll (Mont.) College but Whitman College's women's soccer team fell 1-0 to the visiting Saints in a non-conference match-up at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

The loss leaves Whitman at 0-2 early in the season while Carroll (1-3), an NAIA institution, picks up its first win of the fall.

The Missionaries were only inches away from breaking out to an early advantage when in the game's fifth minute a Clara Merlino shot from just inside the top of the box caromed off the underside of the crossbar and ricocheted behind Carroll goalkeeper Jamie Carter. The ball bounced off the turf just inside the goal line but not far enough for the whole of the ball to have crossed the line.

Carroll got off the game's next three shots, only one of which required a stop from Brewin, before Whitman tilted the field toward its attacking third. Brianna Brown struck a shot in the 19th that sailed left of the goal followed three minutes later by a shot on frame from Alissa Soo that was saved by Carter to keep the game scoreless.

Both Carter and Brewin recorded one more save in the opening half, despite the teams combining for seven shots, leaving the contest knotted at 0-0 entering the halftime break.

Second-half action opened with the Saints sending a pair of shots toward the direction of the goal but Whitman responded with consecutive shots from Lena de Guzman, Brown and Kathleen Daly-Jensen, two of which were lifted over the crossbar and the third requiring a save from Carter.

An innocent parry by Carroll followed but turned decisive when a cross from the right of the goal by the Saints' Lexi Pyette found an unmarked Kayla Bayer at the back post for a volley into the left side of the net behind Brewin in the 59th.

Whitman pushed its attack, getting two more shots in the next 10 minutes but Carroll clogged the middle third over the remaining minutes to stonewall the Missionaries and cling to it's slim advantage.

Whitman heads to the East Coast for its next two games, hoping to find its first win of the season at the Stevens Engineering Tournament on Sept. 12-13, hosted by the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.
